Civil War Badges, Secret Service, War Department, 1860's

The above badges are reproductions of badges issued during the Civil War by the War Department and Allen Pinkerton's Secret Service. Washington DC was flooded with southern sympathizers and spies who reported information about the Union. Allen Pinkerton was appointed to head up the Secret Service to catch the spies. These badges were not carried as much as one might think as the overwhelming work of the Secret Service during the Civil War time was undercover.
