De Jur Grundig Portable Tape
Recorder, 1960's
Grundig made many tape recorders in the 1940's to the 1970's and they
were known for their quality. In the late 1950's and early 1960's Grundig
developed a highly portable recorder that looked much like a Minifon.
Although there was thousands of portable tape recorders coming into the
market place during this time period, only a few really made it. The De
Jur Grundig Portable Tape Recorder was a big hit. This reel-to-reel recorder
was a very small for it's time period and popular among private investigators
and law enforcement since it was priced much less than the Minifon. This
portable model was called the Versatile and versatile it was. it could
be used as a desktop machine or hidden under a coat. it came with it's
own leather case. Note the pictures on the buttons. (see photos below)
Highly modern and high tech for it's time period. The black strip numbers
above the bottoms told you how much time you had on the tape. Grundig
is one of the few electronics companies from the early to mid 1900's that
has continued and still makes and sells equipment today but their focus
has changed.
