Mark V PSE Deception/ Detection Kit, 1970's/1980's
The Mark V Psychological Stress Evaluator was a high end PSE Kit that
would detect deception in the human voice. In the 1970's and 1980's private
investigators were able to obtain a huge volume of assignments in the
form of pre-employment screening using these units. Today, such tests
for pre-employment screening are outlawed. The Mark V PSE Deception/ Detection
Kit was built into a briefcase with a good Panasonic cassette tape recorder
and a readout that would detect and provide PSE readings.
What Is PSE
PSE stands for Psychological Stress Evaluation. It was developed by the
US Military in the 1960's an an alternative to the polygraph. It became
highly popular since there was no need for direct connection to the subject's
body. It became a sort of "remote lie detector" since one could
record conversation on a high quality recorder and then later analyzed
on a PSE. The technique is based on the recognition of an involuntary
voice tremor that can not be heard with the naked ear which is present
when on attempts deception or lieing or is under emotional stress.
These units sold from $6,500 to about $9,500 depending upon the model
and time of purchase. Today, this same type of technology is in digital
form and can be obtained in software program costing a small fraction
of what these analog machines cost.
