Pierce Wire Recorder, 1940's
The Webster Chicago wire recorder was quickly followed by a number of
other brands of wire recorders. This is one of the more successful ones
made by the F.D. Thomas Company called the Pierce Wire Recorder. It was
more "portable" than the first Webster Chicago recorders and
was purchased by private detectives for "wire" jobs. Note the
carry handle on the case top in the photo on the left. The cover shown
in the bottom of the photo would fit over the wire spools to protect them
while it was being transported to a case for a special "wire"
operation. It's important to note that audio recordings at the time was
a technological wonder and private-eyes obtained top dollar for fees for
bringing in the "wired" evidence.
