Before you call or meet with a Private Investigator, you need to make sure that you know the following:
- What is the GOAL of your case?
- When do you need the result by?
- Is this part of a current or future lawsuit?
Now that you know your needs, these are some basic questions that you should ask any Private Investigator before you give them a retainer or payment of any type.
- Are you licensed? (and then check with the State they are licensed in to verify it is current)
- Are you insured?
- Do you have experience in the type of case I need help with?
- What methods will you use to solve my case?
- How will you update me on my case?
- What is the expected cost for my case?
- What is your hourly rate?
- What do you charge if you have to go to court for me?
- How long will the case take?
- What is your confidentiality policy?
- Have your worked for XXXX (subject of the case or law firm)?
I know that when you call a Private Investigator, it’s not a good time for you. But, you still need to do your own due diligence on the person you are about to hire. Please make sure to ask them these basic questions and you MUST verify on your State’s website if the person/company is licensed to be a Private Investigator.
